Nigerian woman jailed over scam

Wed, Mar 25, 2009, New Straits Times.

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA: A man’s wise move to inform the police before meeting a Nigerian woman saved him from falling prey to her scheming.

A week earlier, Buang Md Sayuti, 42, an administrative assistant, received an email saying that he had won US$1 million ($1.5million) in a lucky draw allegedly organised by Microsoft in conjunction with the company’s anniversary celebration in London.

Buang responded to the email and provided his personal information as required.

The following day, on Aug 20 last year, he received another email telling him that he would have to pay processing fees and someone would come to his house with his prize money.

Five days later, he received a call from a woman who claimed her name was Sophia Young. She said he must meet her and pay US$2,750 ($4146) as a fee to release the money from the ‘United Kingdom High Commission’ warehouse.

Buang said he needed three days to pay the fees. Later, the woman sent him an email telling him to bring a copy of his identity card and the email which told him that he won the prize and the fees.

On Aug 27, Buang called Sophia saying that he would meet her at Kuala Lumpur City Centre and pay the fees. He also called the police to inform them about the meeting.

At KLCC, Sophia asked Buang for the fees and documents she had told him to bring. A while later, police arrived and arrested her.

Yesterday, the woman, whose real name is Peace Okotie, 26, a college student, was sentenced to 15 months’ jail after she pleaded guilty of attempting to deceive Buang into believing that she could give him the prize money and inducing him to pay her US$2,750.

She committed the offence at KLCC at 2.45pm on Aug 27, last year.

Magistrate Siti Shakirah Mohtarudin also sentenced her to four months’ jail for overstaying.

Earlier in mitigation, counsel B. Renuka pleaded for leniency as the accused came from a poor family.

Deputy public prosecutor Azimul Azami Mohd Nor submitted that as a college student, Okotie should be aware of the consequences of her actions.

And who said what a man can do, a woman can’t do? Unfortunately students have joined the 419 village. Its unfortunate. Worse, her name is Peace.

  1. Hi..!!

Please i dont have so much to share, but am also one of those people who i can support the court for whatever they’re going to give out for the criminals, cause until now there is no peace, because of this online scamming, i suggest that the Government should start going on schools to see/check if these foreign students are real attending their lessons..and if not they should straight be deported back home, especially the Nigerians these people i think the Government should actions on them, in what manner, they just dont know what they’re doing here in Malaysia, they work up in the morning and they dont know what to do rather than working with their Laptops doing nasty things i.e scamming..

I am really supporting the PM’s decision towards the development of Malaysia as the new strategic plan on removing all these kind of scamming…once again countries like Nigeria it shouldnt be given a permitt to allow its citizens to enter Malaysia, the best thing is Nigeria should be cancelled so as to recude all these kind of fraudings caused..!

    It’s me,

I am 100% in support of punishing these criminals where ever they are found but to single out Nigerians is a crime in itself ‘cos you have criminals all over the world. You have Malaysian scammers as well. My brother lives in Singapore and they have a huge problem with Malaysians going into Singapore to steal and rob banks at times with automatic weapons and quickly enter speed boats and enter Malaysia. Does that make every Malaysian a bank robber? NO! So how can this fool single out all Nigerian students as if your nationality automatically makes you a scammer. If that is the case, then all Malaysians are bank robbers. People in glass houses should not throw stones.

This is to reply on behalf of Nigerians and the students as well, i am a Malaysian citizen and have sympathy for the fellow students because it is not fair to stop nigerians from entering into Malaysia all simply because one person was found wanting..

My point of view is that we have Malaysians out side that are really tarnising our image with all sorts of bad things such as: credit card fraud, carrying of drugs, snatching of bags and robbing of peoples belongings and all this i have experienced in Australia and even in singapore.

As i am writing now there has been a whole lot of atrocities caused by malaysians here in malaysia of which this nigerians see as abormination such as: Raping cases, Killing of innocent people and riding of motor bikes recklessly on the street!

We must clean our home first before talking about the foreigners and just to put a last word, I have been approached by so many malaysians citizens who were trying to con me out of my money and even send sms to get my attraction….

Malaysia Boleh!!! we must prove it and the government should remove their eyes from this foreigners as their presence here is making we the malaysians understand different cultures and characters…

    Thanks!!

Humans out there, before i placed my comment i have read through many comments on the issue of throwing Nigerians away and Not throwing them away. Well am presently studying in Malaysia in one of its reputable college. I i don’t quite agree with the idea of throwing away “Nigerians” for a crime a Nigerian committed, Malaysian have valid laws that meet to the demand of all crime, why not those laws prevail. If Nigerians are problem the way it seems from all what has been read, why not Malaysia solve the problem instead of running away from it. Or don’t my Malaysian brothers and sisters out there think it will mean Government (incapability) Crime is every where, even in advance countries like Britain, USA, etc. I will beg the Malaysians to learn more to be exposed in life, at least listen to world news, watch not only local channels, so as to be better informed about what is going on around the globe.
Thus i don’t think Crime is Nigerian, Nigerian is an independent country with people in it and the people have culture and various ways of life in that Nigeria, just as many heterogeneous society in which Malaysia is not an exception. So if for example Fredrick is a criminal(let it be labeled that Fredrick is a criminal a Nigerian and Not Nigerians are criminals) please lets learn to speak well Thank you all.

Am here again, my name is Fredrick. i also read in one of the comments where someone is trying to act like a hero or should i say, act inapproprietely by saying (Malaysia should give job to Nigerians and that Malaysia is good for scam)Well i managed to get the name as Ddonwise. Brother out there i think you where trying to say something meaningful in a coarsive manner. Which could be understood wrongly. I then think that is better to say that the Malaysian Government should please endeavour to supervise closely what is been published by there institutions that scout for foreign students, because most of us where mislead(if allowed to say i could still use the word “Tricked” us into believing that we will be given jobs in this peace loving country Malaysia)I think that could also be considered as scam or what do you think? However Ddonwise, no country is fit or good for scam

I would also suggest that any one who falls for scam, who is not set as a bait to catch scammers who operate via emails and phones announcing “winner” or anything close to, that has been substantiated should face same purnishment, if not more of that of the scammer. Why? Example. Am Fredrick, i never applied for visa to go to America and some how i get email stating(WOw! congratulations Fredrick you have just won a visa to America, Your email address Came first in our draw or whatever, You need to give ur details and pay this and do that..blar blar blar) if i continue in positive response to such a scam, then am a criminal myself.True or Not? because i know well that i never even applied for American visa. Or some one some how, mail to tell me about a huge money of a dead person in a bank in a country, that my assistance is needed to clear the money, by providing my details, including account details so that the money can be transferred into my account and later we share the money amongst our self. common brothers and sisters, if i respond positively to that crap, is it not what is called aiding crime, so am i not a criminal? Why then should i shout and make noise if it turns out that i was being scammed at the end of the day. I mean, money that is not mine, some one that i dont know. Does it realy fit

greetings to u all, i have read all your comment for the first person that commented well is not a surprising thing to me that is the way Malaysia people sees the African raise that they are all criminals most especially where i come from Nigeria,Well i don’t blame the Malaysia people it is because our government back home do not manage our economy the way it should be, if they have worked on that who will come to Malaysia to come and do what? do Malaysia have the natural racecourses God has bless Nigeria with?

I studied in Malaysia and the experience i faced there was not so good, when i was looking for an apartment to let it was like hell, what they normally say on phone is this: hello are you from Nigeria at the moment you say yes the response will be cannot la.

All this i have experience in Malaysia have made me not to have anything to do with the Malaysians.

Well my advice for my fellow Nationals is that if you are in Malaysia for studies be focus, don’t involve in any crime please i am begging all of you over there just finish your school and come back home and lets join hands together to develop our great country.

i completely agree with jason on this matter but let me use this as a way to pour out my mind against my fellow nigerians. many nigerians have really tanished the countries image. most nigerians come to malaysia in the name of “student” and they drop out and start looking for people to dupe. they shud not complain that there’s is no job or what so ever because before no1 promised you of getting a job once u get here. your objective is to study.
i will support the malaysian police and the imigration to be very hard on nigerians because 90% of nigerians are fraudsters. they want to laugh and make other people cry so they shud be heavily purnished.
recently the imigration raided and some inocent student where caught amongst the bad one’s.
but on the other hand, i want the malaysain people to learn to use their brians and not just fall for any lousy phone calls (mostly from women on behave of the scammers) or email rewarding you with money that you didnt work for.

having gone through all that has been said, i can see everybody stating thing right from their mind and i hope the PM of Malaysia will do something about the rate of joblessness among foreign student so that they can be more focused and use their brains to add to the development of Malaysia. Go to condos and apartments and see foreigners blowing their lives away with cigarette due to the fact that they cant work and what do they think of…how to raise money for the exorbitant colleges and rents. Also the issue of reckless bikers and Indian thieves and gangsters should be nipped in the bud. Nigerians are loving people no matter what they go through they still make themselves happy, i have dealt with them in UK, US and in home Aussie. Let Malaysian govt do that which is right and good will follow. The best of lawyers in practice and students in UK today are Nigerians, best doctor(medical) in South Africa are Nigerians, best Aeronautic Engineer in US is a Nigerian…is Malaysian Govt missing something out? in tapping the potential of these guys from Nigeria? A lot of emerging market is in Nigeria, why not involve these guys and sell your products there….in Nigeria over 180 million rich population, I know you people in Malaysia can beat China to it. Ask Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, MTN, etc how much they are making in Nigeria….Malaysia don’t be self-centered look out and be more richer!!!
